Home Improvement

Home Improvement Photo - Tools

Home improvement isn’t always a walk in the park. Here at ImproveYourHome.org, we want to make the process of remodeling or repairing your home as easy as possible. Before making your final construction decision, or start collecting bids and estimates from local contractors, you will want to consider the following:

Get at least three home improvement estimates or written bids from local contractors.

Check the contractors references.

Ask questions and for an explanation of the estimate.

Home Improvement Contractor Warning Signs

There are a number of signs that the contractor you are meeting with isn’t up to the standards you expect for your home improvement. Be leery of any contractors who:

  • Offer deep discounts
  • Drives an unmarked van
  • Quotes a price estimate that is nowhere near your other bids
  • Unable to provide references or examples of past work
  • Asks for full payment before starting the remodeling or home improvement

Gas Furnace

Gas furnaces are one of the most commonly used home heating systems in the United States. Furnaces push warmed air through duct work and vents throughout the house. It is possible for a furnace to heat a space without duct work, however many homeowners purchase central heating and air units that are larger and often at the center of a heating system.

Average Gas Furnace Prices

Ever wonder how much a gas furnace costs? The price and efficiency of your new furnace will vary from brand to brand, so it is highly important to get multiple estimates from local heating contractors. Gas furnace prices are said to be more affordable than oil furnaces or electric heating.

  • Small gas furnace units cost between $800 -$1,600. Expect to pay an extra $1,000 -$2,000 for furnace installation.
  • Replacing a gas furnace with existing duct work costs $1,500 -$4,500. Older systems can be unpredictable however, and may run $6,000 -$7,500 if extensive work is needed to install your new furnace.
  • New installation of a high efficiency gas furnace runs an average cost of $2,600 -$5,750 for most brands. If there is repair work needed to your existing duct work, you can expect a price of $6,000 -$10,000.

Gas Furnace Efficiency Ratings

The effectiveness of a gas furnace is based on AFUE (Annualized Fuel Utilization Efficiency) measurement. So what exactly is AFUE?

“Essentially the AFUE number is a percentage which relates to the amount of energy that is used to heat your home. In other words – how much heat do you get to enjoy versus heat that escapes out of a chimney or vent pipe.” - Home Improvement Helper

A 15 year old furnace typically loses about half the heat it puts out, giving it an AFUE rating of 50-60%. A modern gas furnace can range as high as 97% AFUE.

Furnace Maintenance & Information

Whether you have a gas furnace, electric furnace, or an oil furnace, there is common maintenance and upkeep that is necessary to help keep your heating costs at a manageable level. Taking good care of your heating & cooling system will also insure you do not need a complete furnace replacement or repair.

Electric Furnace

Electric furnaces are commonly used in homes throughout many different regions of the country.

One advantage of electric heating over gas and other combustion fuels is that electric heating doesn’t give off carbon monoxide. This is good for the environment and makes the unit easier to install because it doesn’t require a flue to carry combustion gases outside. A possible downside may be that electricity can be higher priced than gas as a fuel source for your furnace.

Average Electric Furnace Prices

Electric furnace cost will vary depending on the furnace brand you choose, the efficiency rating, and the heating contractor you hire. Given the varying prices, it is highly recommended to get multiple estimates from trusted HVAC contractors before accepting a final electric furnace estimate.

In the United States, electric furnace pricing is cheaper on average than a gas furnace, because there is no need to store natural gas fuel near the furnace, or pump gas throughout the home.

  • Electric furnaces cost from $1,000 -$2,000. Expect to pay an extra $1,000 -$2,000 for furnace installation from a local HVAC contractor.
  • Replacing an electric furnace that already has duct work costs $1,500 -$2,500. If extensive repair is needed to electrical wiring or duct work in your home, you can estimate $2,000 -$3,500 for a complete new gas furnace installation.

Electric Furnace Efficiency Ratings

An electric furnace efficiency rating is based on an AFUE (Annualized Fuel Utilization Efficiency) scale.

“Essentially the AFUE number is a percentage which relates to the amount of energy that is used to heat your home. In other words – how much heat do you get to enjoy versus heat that escapes out of a chimney or vent pipe.” – Home Improvement Helper

An older furnace can lose up to half of all the heat it puts out, giving it an AFUE rating of 50-60%. A newer, more modern electric furnace can range as high as 97 AFUE.
