Let’s face it, in the economic climate we are faced with in 2012, it is becoming increasingly important to get the most out of your heating and cooling system. A high efficiency furnace, heat pump, or air conditioner is only going to go so far to help keep your home at the right temperature.

In every home there are a multitude of nooks and crannies that can cause your furnace to work harder to keep your home heated in a blustery winter, and strain your air conditioning to stay cool in a blistering summer.

The following diagram outlines some of the most common problem areas you will find in your home.

Electric furnaces are commonly used in homes throughout many different regions of the country. One advantage of electric heating over

Electric furnaces are commonly used in homes throughout many different regions of the country.

One advantage of electric heating over gas and other combustion fuels is that electric heating doesn’t give off carbon monoxide. This is good for the environment and makes the unit easier to install because it doesn’t require a flue to carry combustion gases outside. A possible downside may be that electricity can be higher priced than gas as a fuel source for your furnace.

Average Electric Furnace Prices

Electric furnace cost will vary depending on the furnace brand you choose, the efficiency rating, and the heating contractor you hire. Given the varying prices, it is highly recommended to get multiple estimates from trusted HVAC contractors before accepting a final electric furnace estimate.

In the United States, electric furnace pricing is cheaper on average than a gas furnace, because there is no need to store natural gas fuel near the furnace, or pump gas throughout the home.

Electric furnaces cost from $1,000 -$2,000. Expect to pay an extra $1,000 -$2,000 for furnace installation from a local HVAC contractor.

Replacing an electric furnace that already has duct work costs $1,500 -$2,500. If extensive repair is needed to electrical wiring or duct work in your home, you can estimate $2,000 -$3,500 for a complete new gas furnace installation.

Electric Furnace Efficiency Ratings

An electric furnace efficiency rating is based on an AFUE (Annualized Fuel Utilization Efficiency) scale.

“Essentially the AFUE number is a percentage which relates to the amount of energy that is used to heat your home. In other words – how much heat do you get to enjoy versus heat that escapes out of a chimney or vent pipe.” – Home Improvement Helper

An older furnace can lose up to half of all the heat it puts out, giving it an AFUE rating of 50-60%. A newer, more modern electric furnace can range as high as 97 AFUE.
